Lytham Awarded "5 Blooms" in the International Communities in Bloom Competition 2011
Following on from Lytham's success at Britain in Bloom 2010, the town has competed against international competition in the Communities in Bloom event 2011 (www.communitiesinbloom.ca) and at the results ceremony in Quebec City held on the 29th October Lytham was awarded the top mark of "5 Blooms". The judges made special mention of Lytham's environmental awareness witnessed by the work of groups such as the Friends of the Estuary and also noted the policy of the local and county councils in the management and recycling of waste.
Judging took place on Wednesday 20th July 2011 with the results being announced at the end of October. The judging criteria for Communities in Bloom is much the same as Britain in Bloom with a great emphasis on environmental responsibility and communtiy involvement as well as the obvious need to demonstrate wonderful floral and horticultural displays. Lytham in Bloom will work closely with other community groups, Fylde Borough Council and Lancashire County Council to achieve success.

Lytham wins Gold Award at 2010 Britain in Bloom Finals

After all the hard work that the whole of the Lytham community has put into the town, Lytham was awarded the prestigious gold award at the Britain in Bloom awards ceremony held in Birmingham on the 29th September. Lytham was one of only 19 gold awards and in its category achieved a higher award than St. Ives in Cornwall and Tenby in South Wales. The Lytham in Bloom Committee would like to thank all those who worked tirelessly to achieve this award - local businesses, The Rotary and Lions Clubs, local schools, Fylde Borough Council and of course many private households who have put on wonderful floral displays in their gardens. The picture to the left shows Peter McDonald (left) and Jim Leak (right) from Lytham in Bloom and a delighted Bill Blackledge in the centre who is the Chairman of North West in Bloom and had sufficient confidence in Lytham to put us forward for Britain in Bloom 2010 after we achieved a Silver Gilt award in 2009. In 2011 Lytham will concentrate on the regional competition (North West in Bloom) and hope to be nominated for Britain in Bloom 2012 coincident with the Open Golf Championship being held at Royal Lytham and St. Annes that summer.

At the North West in Bloom awards ceremony held at Southport on the 21st October, Lytham won the small coastal resort category for the sixth year in succession. In addition Hall Park School won an environmental award and the overall school achievement award and St. Bede's Catholic High School were commended for their environmental efforts.

Margaret and Steve Hall of Staining Road Nurseries won the award for the best feature in a public place for their floral windmill in the centre of Lytham (left) and the Clifton Arms Hotel won a silver gilt award in the "Best Small Accommodation" category. Finally The Homestead on Henry Street won a level four Neighbourhood award for their floral displays on Henry Street and Queen Street. So all in all an extremely successful summer for Lytham!

About Lytham in Bloom
Lytham in Bloom Trust was formed in 1998 by a small number of interested local residents who wanted to help make Lytham a better place in which to live. Recognising that local authority budgets are constantly under pressure, Lytham in Bloom seeks to complement Fylde Borough Council’s (FBC) efforts by generating revenue through local fundraising activities, sponsorship, donations and grants. These funds are then used to undertake projects, buy plants and trees and to provide financial help to other organisations. Lytham in Bloom's main objectives:
  • To help promote Lytham as a lovely place in which to live or to visit
  • To work with other charitable trusts and the local authority to beautify and brighten up Lytham
  • To interface with local businesses, schools, churches and private individuals to obtain their support whether in cash or in kind
  • To participate in regional and national competitions
